{2:48 minutes to read} Do you remember this quote from Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne?

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” you are stronger than you think by Jennifer Safian

When going through very emotional times, and divorce is certainly high up on that list, we all feel more vulnerable. A personal crisis can leave us feeling:

  • physically exhausted;
  • emotionally depleted;
  • lost;
  • less able to concentrate on our work;
  • short tempered for no reason; and
  • scared.

These are only a few of the symptoms that we may be experiencing. Like Winnie, we may feel great insecurity and fear, and more so regarding our ability to work out major decisions with the person from whom we are separating.

Let’s remember who we are in our better days. This difficult episode will be limited in time, and fears are just that – fears. They should not define who we are. They can be met and overcome as we structure our new lives going forward.

Just last week, I received a message from one of my clients, saying:

“Dear Jennifer, I just wanted to thank you for all the help you provided me in this difficult process. Out of fear, I was willing to give up everything just to get it over with. Your presence and support helped give me the strength I needed to go through the process and make informed decisions. The result was a good Agreement for me, my children and their Dad. I could never have done this without you.”

Though I was touched and appreciated my client’s note, I was really only there to facilitate a conversation between her and her spouse; I was there to help them both voice and understand each other’s needs so that they could make the right decisions for themselves and for their family, together. They had the courage to face and discuss all the issues necessary to create their new living arrangements.

Even in a crisis, continue to trust yourself. With the proper support, you will be able to make all the decisions you need to make.
