Jennifer Safian of safian-mediation.com interviews mental health professional Carla L. Mannino. What is the role of a mental health professional during the divorce mediation process?  At what point do you step into the process and help the parties?

Divorce is often considered to be one of the greatest stressors an individual can experience. As a mental health professional, I can guide one through this process and assist an individual in navigating the difficult and challenging moments of a divorce: depression, anxiety, grief, fear are just some of the symptoms that people may experience when going through divorce and that require attention and support.

It is also important to remember that divorce not only affects the couple, but also their children. They can often feel scared and unsafe which may lead to feelings of anger or isolation. In my role as psychotherapist for one of the parents, I can advise them regarding their children and recommend a child psychologist to help them not only process their feelings, but also teach them valuable coping skills to regulate their emotions.

Can you work with both parties or just with one?

Please keep in mind, when seeking out a mental health professional, that it would be unethical for him/her to see both parties individually, or to see one party and the couple together. I work with one party alone unless I am hired initially to work with the couple.
