{2 minutes to read} Window shopping on the internet for a separation/divorce mediator is no easy task. And once you find a mediator that may be the right one for you, understanding the process can be overwhelming.
I, like many other mediators, offer divorcing spouses the opportunity to have an initial in-person meeting, in my office, to obtain answers to their many questions. As is the case with the mediation process itself, I will only meet with both parties together so that no one feels that the other person has an advantage over him or her.
Some of the most typical questions covered in this consultation are:
- How does mediation work?
- What are the issues that we need to work through?
- How many sessions will it take?
- How long are the sessions?
- Do we meet weekly or bi-weekly?
- How much will it cost?
- Do we have to go to court?
- Do we each have to have an attorney?
- What documents will we get at the end of the process?
- What is your role as a mediator during the process?
- What happens if we get stuck and can’t agree on something?
- What do we need to prepare for the mediation?
All of these questions, and others you may have regarding the process, can be answered during the mediation consultation.
The consultation is also an opportunity for the parties to ensure that they are both comfortable with me as their mediator. After all, they are going to be discussing many personal issues and they need to feel that I am a good fit for them.
If you or someone you know can benefit from such a meeting, encourage them to reach out to me. There is nothing to lose and much to win.
