{3 minutes to read}  Does not reaching an agreement mean that the mediation process failed? The answer is no.

Mediation has many benefits, even if you don’t come to full decisions.

  • Coming to the mediation table indicates goodwill on the part of both parties to work together toward a resolution.
  • You will get more clarity regarding each other’s concerns.
  • In the presence of the mediator, you may be able to express certain thoughts that you were not able to previously share one-on-one with your spouse or partner.
  • You will have a better understanding and gain valuable insights into the reasons behind your disagreements.
  • You will become more informed and better prepared for future conversations.
  • You may gain confidence in speaking up on issues that you were concerned about raising.
  • The mediation process encourages creativity and brainstorming of different options, with the goal of resolving problems and making joint decisions.
  •  In working together, you are choosing to avoid costly emotional and financial litigation and favoring a more peaceful process.

Whether you are going through a separation or a divorce or trying to resolve a conflict with someone with whom you are closely connected, even if you believe that you don’t agree on anything, your best approach might be to start with mediation. You may be surprised and discover that if you come with an open mind, you may well be able to find some common ground and make decisions together.
