{2:12 minutes to read} As hard as it is to believe, here we are once again at the beginning of a new year!January 2017! Happy New Year! by Jennifer Safian

Yes, it may seem like “it’s deja vu all over again” as Yogi Berra once said, but in truth, at the beginning of every year, there is an opportunity for renewal and change. An opportunity for each one of us to re-examine where we are in our lives, personal as well as professional.

And by this, I don’t mean creating a list of resolutions, which are easily made and just as easily forgotten. I am certainly not one to make resolutions, because we all know that most of us do not stick to them. A few days or weeks into the new year, most have gone by the wayside.

Given the lack of civility observable on all sides during the presidential campaign, what I propose may be more necessary and much harder than simply making a resolution. It requires looking at ourselves in the mirror, and asking whether we are being the very best that we can be. It takes courage to examine ourselves and honestly recognize those areas where we could do better.

  • Want something better for yourself.
  • Define what it will take to achieve it.
  • Do everything possible to attain it.
  • Make a year-long plan.
  • Pursue your plan to the best of your ability.

Whether in our family relationships, our social life, work, or any other area of our lives, it is never too late to try and improve any or all parts of it. Isn’t that a worthy goal for this new year?

My best wishes for a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2017 to one and all.
